electric fan 700 1990

Is there a relay for the elec. fan in front of the rad.? Can't find it in any diagrams. I have no voltage at the fan plug(the one by the fan) when the ac is running. (Isn't it supposed to run always with a\c?) I hot wired the fan and it runs fine. I'm melllting!!!!

As Bob explained, the coolant temp controls when the fan should kick on. There is, however, a relay involved. It's one of the two relays mounted on the front side of the RH strut tower. (The other one, known as the radio suppresion relay, feeds power to the ignition/fuel system.) They look the same, and yes, they're interchangeable.

Chris, not all 740's have a fan relay on the strut tower. This was a discovery even to my mechanic as we tried to figure why my fan wasn't going on. Either my fan is wired direct or its relay lives inside the car with all the others.

It's only supposed to run at extremely hot engine temps. When they do run, it's usually only a minute or two. The power goes to the temp sensor on the radiator. When it gets hot, the switch closes and the fan starts. Most folks wire them to run with the A/C. Just remember, the A/C runs with defrost and may overcool in winter.
