A/C 700 1985

Replaced the A/C clutch a few weeks ago because it was blowing the fuse everytime the A/C was turned on, it fixed the problem but now I have a different one. When sitting at idle the A/C works great but when you start driving the compressor will cycle on and off like the system is low on freon. It is cold when it is on and the freon level is good. Anyone have a clue as to why the clutch is loosing its power? Thanks for any info.

Doug

Re: A/C 700 1985

Are you sure that the system has the correct charge of freon? What are your high and low side pressures at 2000 rpm? Things that could cause your problem are an incorrect freon charge, defective pressure sensor, or a plugged orifice tube and/or accumulator. Check the pressures and get back to us.

Re: A/C 700 1985

Turns out the system was low on freon. Invested in a re-charge with R-12 and had some dye added in case there is a leak. I was beatin on that clutch pretty good to get it off, maybe I jarred some freon loose, I don't know if that is possible or not. Guess I will wait and see what happens. Thanks for the input though.

Sure; the pressure switch on the accumulator is turning off the clutch, just like it's supposed to. Nominally it's set at a pressure coresponding to slightly above 32 F so the evaporator doesn't freeze. If you pull the electrical connector off the switch, you'll find an adjustment screw between the prongs. Play at your own risk.
