Will a '83 Eng. work in a '77 - (Both 240's) 200 1985

I have a '83 240 that the cluth is out of . The body sucks too. But the engine is still strong even at 295K I found a '77 with an excellent body. and int. but the engine is shoy Could I make the '83 work in it?

Yes, and no. The easiest way to use it is to use the head off the 77. The

83 has LH injection which uses the injector ports in the manifold. The

77 has K-jetronic and the injectors are in the cylinder head. So, the easiest thing is to switch the head over and now you'll have a B23F with

K-jetronic injection. Of course, if you like projects you could unbolt the

entire injection system off the 83 complete, and put it into the 77 and have an LH injected 77. The fuel pumps are incompatible so its best to

change over everything if you do this. Personally I like the simplicity

of the K-jet and its easier to add performance modifictions to the K-jet

than the LH. The K-jet will compensate for more fuel and air at high rpms

    better than the LH.

      Dave,

I just though of this... the trans. in the '83, a 4sp/od is good... do you know if it will work in the '77. Just in case the '77's trans. is bad in addition to it's engine.

        Yes Bill,

The tranny will work and bolt right up. You should take advantage of the

relay type wiring setup for the O/D in the 83. Another main difference is the splines on the tranny input shaft are finer so you want to use the clutch from the 83 with the trans. The flywheels are the same on both cars. Also the drive shaft flange should be checked to make sure they are the same or you can just use the driveshaft from the 83 if you don't want to take a chance. Ohh, the joy of easy to interchange parts. I really like the early cars for their simplicity. Its great to add refinements from the later cars, to make them nicer, too. This should be a really nice setup

with the extra torque from the 2.3 being a nice improvement.

        Wish you well,

Very Interesting. If I understand you correctly I can just pull both engine's But the '77 head on the '83. Drop it into the '77 and drive off

      ;-)

Yes, that is the basic idea. You will have to change over all the ancilliary stuff like the intake manifold, control pressure regulator,

etc, but the engine is compatible. You might want to consider using the

cam from the 83 head but you could do that at a later date because thats easy to change in the car.
