Re: nivomat? 900 1995

Nivomat suspension on Volvos is good for passenger cars, wagons or family vehicles likely to carry fairly heavy loads in the rear more or less often. Nivomats can often be bought for around $200 each although I am not sure this is the case for the Volvo 960. Nivomats can last 100,000 miles and they come with a lifetime warranty from Boge. Try:

www.fcpgroton.com

As far as I know, they have lowest prices on Volvo parts right now. Nick Bauer has been helpful to me there.

www.shox.com

They had some Nivomats for less than $200 each a few months ago

Borton Volvo is populat at Brickboard and supposed to discount prices on Volvo parts ordered through email or internet.

Even if you have to pay Volvo list prices, you may want to keep your Nivomat suspension the way engineers designed it. It is good and not too expensive for what you get. Best regards

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

One caveat to Rafael's post, however... Volvo does NOT warranty the Nivomats for the life of the car. You have to get them from an aftermarket supplier like IPD, etc. to take advantage of BOGE's warranty. So, it is worth getting them from somewhere OTHER than Volvo, even if just for the warranty...

Lance

(waiting for my replacement warrantied Nivomats from IPD...the darn things only lasted 90K miles this last time :)

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

Unless they were special ordered, your 1995 960 with the Multilink-II system probably has conventional shocks. Post back with the alpha-numeric chassis code and I will look it up in my data booklet. (Its the entry in the second column, 3rd row of the product plate, located approximately over the right headlight.)

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

According to the book, the Volvo pn for the shock, code "Z", is 91 57 219 and the list is $487 according to my friendly parts guy, so it has to be one of the Nivomats. I would try calling IPD to see if they can get them. Mine is a code "Y" and isn't one of those. Your rear anti-roll bar should be 21mm diameter also. (Mine is 16 mm on my wagon.)

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

Jim-

Do you have a 965 with multilink rear, and non-nivomats? Is is coil-spring multilink, or the transverse leaf spring?

How do your shocks attach at the bottom? Is it a standard shock bolt or a little crossbar flange? (basically, do they bolt up the same way as a Nivomat does on a multilink rear?

1990 780T w/M46 & w/ Multilink, looking to ditch the nivomats...

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

From '95 up all 960's including wagons have the newer Multi-link II with the composite transverse spring system.

On the Multi-link II the lower end of the shock is mounted to the trailing arm using a BIG shock bolt. ie, The bolt just goes into the lower inner end of the shock and attaches it to a taped hole in the trailing arm.

The Multi-link II sedans&wagons were available with and with-out Nivormats, with a matching spring for each. I don't think the Multi-link I, in sedans only, was available with-out the "Nivos". Therefore finding appropriate springs may be a major problem.

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

Jim-

Ah, I hadn't realized that there were two incarnations of the Multilink...

Springs I have all taken care of, I'm just looking for an easy replacement for the Nivomat shocks themselves, and was hoping to find something that would just bolt into place the same way. (The alternative is to fabricate an adapter of some sort...) Kind of a drag that Volvo changed the shock mounting system on the newer system...

Thanks for the info.

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

There have been many questions on Multi-link I on this board in the past. If you find a good way to convert to convention shocks tell us how.

I put Konis on an '85 760 live axle car in the past, now-x wife's car, by adding air-lifs but it didn't work that great. PITA to keep adjusting the air pressure!

Re: nivomat? 900 1995

They are not so bad from RPR or if you can catch Rusty's auction on Ebay. $300-400 per pair. Maybe try shox.com, though that is a guess on my part. Once in the lifetime for a nice IRS ride like that is not the end of the world.
