Beefier tires & wheels for 140? 140-160 1970

I want to upgrade the tires/wheels on my 1970 144s. The stock size is 165, I'd like to go with a 185/70 or 185/60. Can the stock wheels handle a tire this size? It looks like there is a lot of extra spce in the wheel wells for a wider rim/tire, so I'm thinking about upgrading the wheels also. I want to keep it looking like the antique volvo that it is, can I get a wider wheel from another volvo like a P1800 or 122? Does anyone sell an aftermarket wheel that is wider then stock, but keeps the same or similar appearence? Thanks.

    Re: Beefier tires & wheels for 140? 140-160 1970

There was a series of wider rims for the 140/164 starting in about

1973, and I think they are marked with the width.

    I'm using 195-75/15 and 205-75/15 on both my 69 164 and my 122

wagon, using standard early wheels. Works fine.

I did have to do a little hammer work on the inner front of the rear

fenders on the 164, right at the bottom. Took about 10 seconds per

    side.

You could get the rims widend. I've seen this done on a 122 (1/2" ethier side). I couldn't tell it was done until I looked from the back of the car.

    It was running 215/55/15's.

I'm going to do it one day........165's aren't fun sideways when you're not even trying!!

185-65-15 will fit on the standard rim, just, and gives the approx same rolling radius as a 165-15.

122 wheels won't fit, different PCD, 1800 will provided it is a fuel injection car, as will 164, 240 etc

    Regards

if my memeory is still workin....the only place you will notice a problem if you get tirers to wide or tall is the right rear wheel well, its smaller then the left side...this was on one of my 164E's....but remember finding this out from tryin to stick a bigger tire under the car...ok went out and looked at the 75 164E got 205/75x15 stock rims.. on it, and the wifes 84 242 got 195/75 x 14 tires on the turbo rims...these are both well oversized tires on both cars..

Tommy, I just put 185/65 R15's on my '73 wagon and the car is thanking me for it, it handles better and looks better, your stock wheels can certainly handle the upgrade and I recommend it.

While the stock wheels could probably (!) handle 185 (discuss this with your tire dealer), the usual thing around here is to either have the wheels widened by a specialized company or get a wider rim. Wider rims include the 5.5 from the 164 (should be easier to find in the US than in europe), or your choice of 240, 740 or selected 940 rims. I will admit that I didn't like the look of a 140 with 17" 740 rims and very low profile tires, but stock 240 steel wheels or stuff like the 5 spole 240 turbo wheels or so doesn't look too out of place.

    Bram
