Air Conditioner bypass kit from IPD.. 200 81

Hi all,

I am looking to remove my old AC system, as I do not want to convert it, and I rarely use the AC anyway. I have found the adapter kit offered from IPD, but I am up in Canada, and the current exchange rate would hammer me for such a simple part. Has anyone got any other options/suggestions for doing this procedure, preferably with everyday parts that might be available to me in Canada.

Cheers

From looking through the Volvo parts microfilm, they made virtually every combination of power steering, A/C, air pump, etc. You could go to a dealer parts department and ask him to show you the different setups on his parts computer. Then go looking or contacting the junkyards.

Buy a belt of the appropriate length (sorry sold my 244 with it) to go from main pulley directly to PS pump. I had this on my 244 for at least a year with no problem. There is a slight offset, but this did not seem to bother the belt much. I suppose you could make a spacer fairly easy, but keep it simple I say!

Phil -- I remember seeing the IPD bypassing kit, but I can't remember how they do it -- a bushing on the shaft to extend the pulley further out, perhaps?

Whatever... On my three 240s I'd added the non-a.c.-equipped power steering pump bracket and hardware. It mounts the power steering pump down lower and farther forward. It also frees up tons of room so you can get in there to change your oil trap element much more easily.

Go to a pick-n-pull and try to find a non-a.c. 240 -- should be lots of those in Canada. Remove the power steering pump (or not, if you need to save money), the metal straps which mount to the pump (they're different than what's on your car), all the bolts (they're different as well) and the plate which bolts to the block. Should be able to get it all for $15.

You'll also need a new accessory belt. And you won't ever need to split the crankshaft pulley ever again to remove belts. That's worth something right there!

If you don't do the swap right away, draw yourself a sketch of how everything goes. I ran into this my first time -- I grabbed the stuff right before snow season and didn't get around to making the swap until after snow season. By that time I had forgotten the geometry and spent a long time noodling it out.

      Hi Rob,

thanks for the advice, that sounds a little more like it...my only question is do you know the belt number/size that you used once you did the conversion, is it the same as a non a/c 240?

      Cheers again!
