universal joint/rubber bushing 700 1987

Hi, I have a 87 5 speed turbo that has a rubber bushing between the transmission and the first section of the drive-shaft that has started to shear and needs to be replaced. My questions are, is this a dealer only item? what's the piece called? will the new piece align up properly since the old one has slipped to the point that the bolts from both sides are banging together? thank-you for any info Dave-O

As John said, it's called a flex-disc. (Or, the BMW guys call it a guibo, it's actually the same part!)

www.fcpgroton.com has them for $30... IPD sells them for $90. you decide.

The part is known as a Flex Disc. You need to replace it now, as running it that way is not good for the OD output bearing. Yes, it will align fine. It is available from All Oem Volvo parts for less than $50 US. Try clicking on the link below, and you might go right to it if my link works.

John, you had one too many http's in your link address. I'm going to have to do a driveline R&R pretty soon, so it looks like it's FCP for me.

I cut and pasted the site address and I forgot to erase the original http:// Try it now.

I am surprised the original flex dis in your car has lasted this long. Have you changed the brakes, and finished the headlight relay installation?

Re: universal joint/rubber bushing 700 1987

Allright, this raises a red flag for me. I changed the transmission in my car. Afterwards, something wasn't right so the gear shifter was too low and the bottom of it hit the flex disc. By the time I figured out why the shifter was shaking up and down in 1st and 3rd gear, the disc was frighteningly ugly looking (so much in fact that i didn't look too carefully at it). It just looks like some rubber has been frayed off of it. My local volvo mechanics told me to pretty much drive it to death with the shifter shaking. I fixed it (since I didn't know what was really wrong) by taking some home depot wall hangers made of substantial metal and leveraged them between the body of the car and the metal ring around the shifter boot. It holds up the metal bars that support the gear shifter and attach to the transmission with 4 bolts. That way, at least the flex disc isn't damaged more. I've been driving like this for about 3,000 miles.

My question, what kind of damage have i likely caused? There is a low rumble noise now coming from what i think is the driveshaft... I'm taking the car to my mechanics to have them check it out. I don't want to be paying $200 for them to take down the tranny, so whatever they say, i'll prolly do.

Nathan

You probably have the wrong crossmember/transmision mount combination. The transmission should not sit that low. The flex disc is not hard to replace. Sorry that my link was bad, but go to All Oem Volvo parts and you will find two versions of the disc for sale for either $49 or $57 US.
