engine dies 700 89

The B230FT with AW-71 tranny died twice this morning on the way to work. Everything seemed normal one minute and then it stopped without any warning, no stumble, nothing. Radio contined to play. Put it in neutral, turned the key and it started up both times without any problem. Any ideas?

Mark, if fuel pump relay doesn't solve problem you might look at the hall sensor/switch. Just had mine done because of a similar problem and the problem went away.

Is it difficult to restart? I suspect a faulty FI relay. It seems to be a fairly common failure for cars of this age. I recommend that you resolder yours a la Don Foster and see if that helps. (Costs nothing=good place to start.) Follow the link below to the 700/900 FAQ. Good luck.

Both times I was able to re-start immediately.

Hmm. The FI relay seems to typically cause a prolonged no-start problem, but I still wouldn't discount it. Especially since it's free to re-solder if you're decent with a soldering iron. I would definitely try that first.

Beyond that, I think that you're looking at some kind of bad electrical connection pertaining to fuel injection or ignition, but I don't know what. If it were something like a bad fuel pump, you would have warning before the engine quit entirely. And if it were a more major electrical fault, (like corroded battery cables), your radio probably wouldn't continue right on playing. I suggest that you look for all the chassis grounds that you can find and clean/tighten them. At the very least, you'll be preventing future problems with that tactic. Good luck.
