Exhuast manifold? 200 1980

There is a metal hose connected to the part (just below) the exhaust manifold. Its a silver pipe that is connected to the start of the exhuast pipe in the engine compartment. The mechanic had taken it off, and said it really doesn't need to be connected, because we live in the california desert.

But before I knew that, I had reconnected it to the car....because i was checking the engine just for the sake of it.

Here's the question, Should I diconnect it again because of the heat?

thanks

AL

Re: Exhuast manifold? 200 1980

I take it this is the heat pipe that supplies warm air to the filter box. Not needed in California except at high elevations in winter. It must be in place to pass smog. Most people pop out the thermostat motor inside the air box and leave the hose on so it looks legal. Removing it will make the AMM last longer, warm up of engineis not slowed signioficantly.
