Let's hope I don't get either of us in too much trouble here, John...one way out is to drag the scroll-bar, on the right hand side of the main 700 page, all the way down to the bottom, then look to your left for 'archives', in which well-described procedures are , well, they're: well described! Seriously! The other thing is that if your '92 is anything like most earlier 700's, you have to remove the whole console to get at the area under the shifter-faceplate. As long as you are there, you may as well install a new lightbulb for your shift indicator, and check your emergency brake, because it's enough of a pain in the a...(PITA) that it doesn't make sense to do this undoing-console procedure more than once every few years. You have to open your console elbow rest, undo a screw or two, undo some screws at the back of the console where the rear ashtray is, another under where your hand goes when you have it on the handbrake; you also want to pull the handbrake UP, so that when the clips and screws from the removed FRONT ashtray area, etc (see, I TOLD you that the 700-900FAQ [which is NOT the same thing as the just-plain 'FAQ', which is just about conduct, language, etc., on the various sub-sites here]) are undone, you can wiggle the console up-and-back, but CAREFULLY, because there are a bunch of connectors (windows, heated seats, etc) which do not have very long connecting cables....BUT, now might be a goood time (key OFF) to check those connectors one-at-a-time for good tight electrical contact, corrosiion, etc., PM (Preventive Maintenance,in the Army) in general. You might also find some pens, paper clips, gum, hairpins, coins, etc. many of which can cause shorts, interfere with the handbrake, etc. Take advantage of this seldom-seen part of your car to do all that you can before buttoning it up for 5 or 10 more years. Good Luck, hope I helped. If not, I'll refund the price of the advice, and have you go to Mike Cassaro for more advice/help/counselling...he's some guru's Foster child...:>) ---PD
