Hot Start Problem 900 1993

My '93 940 Turbo Wagon has a starting problem in very hot weather. If I try to start it when it's only been off for a few minutes, the starter turns, but there is no engagement at all. If I wait a few more minutes, usually about 5, it will start fine. The problem only occurs when the outdoor temperature is at least 90 degrees.

Someone mentioned something about the "Power Stage" being insufficiently protected from the heat generated by the turbo engine, but I have no idea what he was talking about.

Any suggestions?

When you say "the starter turns", do you mean that "the starter does not crank the engine but spins freely", or do you mean that the engine turns over but does not fire up?

If it's the first one, your starter is either staying engaged, or it is just crapping out. Sometimes things like that happen over a certain period of time, in certain conditions.

The problem is the latter: the engine does not fire up. Something definitely seems to be getting too hot, and just requires some time to cool off before I can start the car. And on really hot days that seems to be more than a couple of minutes. Since it only happens occasionally (Connecticut is not over 90 degrees too often, and I don't often stop somewhere for less than 15 minutes) I guess I can live with it. But it would be great to isolate whatever is getting too hot, and either replace it, or find some way of insulating it.

Can you hear the fuel pump running? If not, resolder the fuel pump relay located under the radio, middle row left side. Remove it, pop the plastic case off, resolder the connections. Reassemble it and put it back in. You might do the rest of them too.

Don Foster recommends doing this since the relays were made with insuficient solder and vibration/heat cause the joints to crack. When hot no current will flow causing the no start condition you have. No cost is involved, unless you don't have a solering iron or solder.

The power stage is the ignition amplifier, located on the inner fender behind the driver's headlamp. Other culprits can be the rpm sensor, the fuel pump relay and the radio suppression relay. See the FAQ for more information.
