O/D SOLENOID, is it a pain? 200 79

I just bought a 1979, 245. The over drive isn't working. I want to take the solenoid off of a 242 I have here. Will this be dificult to get at? I have some back trouble and don't know if I want to do it myself or find someone else to do it. I've ordered gaskets for it and was shocked at the price of a new solenoid. How often do they die? I never had one die on me before. This one was gone when I got the car.

Not bad at all if you have a short handled 1" wrench ground to 1/4" thickness to get on the darn nut up in the tranny tunnel. Or get the IPD tool. Then, replacing the o-rings and cleaning the solenoid to restore fluid handling, or replacing the noid if it is burned out is not too bad.

Check the electrics starting at the solenoid. Remove all the wires and then apply current where appropriate. It should make a clicking sound. I'ld be surprised if its the sole., usually it's electric (bad coonections/broken wires) Trouble shoot this before changing the sole. Is it the shift switch? The relay? The 4th gear only swtch? And no its noy that hard to pull, its a little akward, but if you raise the car good and high (SAFETY FIRST!!!) its easy to get at.

    Best of Luck, Patrick.

Re: O/D SOLENOID, is it a pain? Still having trouble 200 79

I checked the wires and sure enough there was no juice. I ran wires to the solenoid and took it for a drive. The O/D seemed to engage for a second, then it seemed to rev very high and then felt and sounded like I dropped the clutch again. This was followed by a hot rubber smell. Does this mean I need a whole new O/D unit or may the solenoid just be bad?
