Turbo problem... 200 1982

I just bought a 1982 240 Turbo. I got a great deal on it and the only problem I have found so far is that when I get the turbo gauge to go into the red zone, the engine "stalls out"? and goes back down into the yellow zone. I can hear the turbo whining as I accelerate, etc. I am hoping someone may have some insight on any possible problems as I would like to avoid a rebuild if possible.

Thanks!!

Dan

Your wastegate is not working, I had the same problem, the stalling is a built in safety, when you get into the red the car shuts down the ignition or the fuel I can't remember which to keep you from blowing it up. My problem turned out to be a cracked vacuum line on the wastegate.

Man- you're not supposed to run the turbo up into the red- It indicates over-pressurization in the intake manifold. (see owners manual, page 14) If it's been running up that high, I'd definately get it shecked. I can floor my 83 Ti from a standing start and it will not go into the red.
