What transmision do I have? 700 1987

I have a 1987 740 GLE (USA)sedan. It is not a turbo or overdrive.I'm trying to find out if I have a ZF or a AW trans. How can I tell?

Look at the shift indicator. ZF has D 3 2 1. AW is D 2 1 and has a button on the laft side of the knob to control overdrive. Or look at the pan. AW is rectangular, ZF gets narrower at the rear.

You have a ZF trans if you don't have overdrive. According to volvoworld.com, non-turbo '87 740s had only one auto trans, and it was the ZF22L.

      Hah - that is Wrong!! I have a 740GLE non-turbo with the AW71L...

I know that because I replaced the silly check ball that causes the hard 1-2 shift.

The thing works like a charm at 270,000 miles to date...

Yes, volvoworld.com is usually off a little on some things, so the fact that you have an AW71 doesn't surprise me.
