A/C Question 700 1986

MY daughter's 740 GLE has lost all the freon. Last year the hoses and accumulator were replaced and it ran fine for the summer. So this year I changed all over to R-134a when I discovered it was too low to run. It now holds a charge less than a day.

My question is: Does anyone know what the filter looking item on the a/c line under the front passenger side fender is? Is it a filter with a pop-off valve? It's shaped llike a round filter with the line going in and out, but to one side it has a round piece off of it. This item appears to be leaking freon and oil from the system. Any Ideas?

Re: A/C Question 700 1986

I think what is leaking is a high pressure pop-off valve. This pops when the high side pressures get to high. Usually caused by engine cooling fan in front of the condenser does not come on. or just restricted air flow across the condenser. or possiable a restriction in the a/c

Re: A/C Question 700 1986

Greg:

It's called the muffler and it does just that: muffles the pulses of the compressor so the a/c system runs quieter in the cabin. Sounds like it's a leakin'. I think it's part of one of the lines, so you'll have to replace the whole line. There's a fitting near it--maybe that's leaking. But you may find that the line is shot, as it isn't exactly in the best location for preservation...
