Adjustable Cam Sprockets?

Allright is there any other type of adj cam sprocket out there other than the one like in IPD?

I want an automatic one. It adjusts to your rpm. At low rpms teh spring in it acts accordingly and advances the cam timing, and at high rpms the spring acts accordingly and retards the cam timing.

They have this set up for volkswagons as I was gonna get one for my porsche until the timing belt broke, and it was like 300 bucsk for one, now I want one for a volvo.

Is there one? or is there only the manual adjustable on like in IPD :(

this idea makes so much sense that...

i thought of it myself! i didn't know if anyone had manufactured something like this before, but it seems so obvious. use centrifugal forces to move flywheel weights in a spring-advance mechanism - voila!, variable valve timing. i didn't get so far as designing it, but then i wondered why i had never seen anything like it. VVT systems introduced by the automakers are always so much more complicated, i thought, "why wouldn't this work? it's so simple. too simple?" so, i guess the idea does work. we should get MVP or ipd to make one. would improve the power band on any of our cars.

Re: this idea makes so much sense that...

I remember something like that from the 1970's. Do a patent search.

Today it would be reasonable to design a hydraulic or electric (as in motor) actuated cam advance mechanism controlled by a microprocessor. Then you could program it for any number of variables including load, air temperature, engine temperature, manifold vacuum or turbo boost, altitude, throttle position, fuel octane, wife's name......

Re: this idea makes so much sense that...

i think i saw it in a magazine, sports car, or something like that, the engine was set up so that the exhuasts got put right back into the engine, all of it, instead of EGR, it had hydrualics lifing the head putting the valves at different angles and heights (that really makes you wonder what type of headgasket eh? ?haha), had electronic automatic cam timing, all that bunch.

I think the engine went through about 5000 cycles before the exhaust went out teh tail pipe so that the thing had 0 HP after all the technology had been put on!

well sure, but hey i'm 17 so hey i can't afford that, and i think saab already is coming out with that where the engine moves around, the block, the head, etc.

      I'm game if your game.

It would be wicked if IPD made one, they have so much stuff, but this is the one thing they are missing.

    Re: Adjustable Cam Sprockets?

I would suggest that you contact the company that manufactures the

one for VW. They used to advertise in Dune Buggys and Hot VWs magazine.

They may agree to make you one for volvo. I don't remember their name.

Get a copy of the magazine they may still have an ad. I don't know of

anyone making this for volvo either. Sounds like a good idea for the

turbo cars to help out if you install a cam like the VX.

    Never seen one 200 1991

The sprocket you're describing comes close to variable valve timing system used on modern engines (VTEC of Honda, VANOS of BMW, etc.). I do not think one is available for older Volvos. Actually I'm pretty sure it is not.

What was it about no idle with the k-grind? What engine did you put it in?

    Thanks

    Andrew

Re: Never seen one 200 1991

They have them for jettas, foxes, golfs etc. and porsches (same cam sprocket on cars, just a different cam, so it fits on any VW of that type, 4 banger), so why don't we all get a petition or some BS liek that and tell them to make it.

I want maximum usage of torque, and I don't want to spend money on teh mnaul adjusting sprocket because I figure it might not be worth it, but and AUTO adjustable one definately would be worth it.

The only prbolem you run into is ignition timign gets all wacked up if you have the type of engine that gets its ignition distrib driven right off the cam. On VWs and Porsches this was the case, and not many people realized that they are actually losing horsepower because their ignition is retarding at high rpms and advancing at lows, along with teh cam.

On the volvos, or at least the old ones the cam does not drive the distrib so thats cool, but then i hear on one of the later 4 cyl engines it does get driven off the cam, anyhow, an aftermarket ignition then digital reading off the flywheel is my recomendation.

Used to see them. 200 1991

The 740s used a cam driven distributor. I would be interested in buying

the automatic cam gear also. You could always change the engine to a

intermediate shaft driven distributor or the crank trigger type.

Maybe we can find the name of the company.

          http://thorin.adnc.com/~figf/

          Franco industries.

I think they make it if people request it, because the volkswagons/porsches never had this at one time or something.

BTW I think VWs and Audis are crap.

            Well,

I emailed them from the website at that link. We'll see what they

say. I'm sure it can't be that much different to make it work on

            our volvos.
