can exchange 81 engine to 84 body??? 200 8184

Gentlemen. I have a tired 81 B21f, automatic that is verry tired. Can get an inexpensive 84 B30E jetronic automatic with tired engine (250K & smoke) oops the 81 is cis inject, of course, with injectors into head not manifold. Query. Can one switch engines without too much wire/harness trouble? Can one use the short block from the B21F and all the other stuff in the 84 B30E(made in Belgium). Don't know if I am being clear about this. Er, 81 short block with 84 head/injectors etc. Can a switch be made? Don't know if you folks even see this stuff. My friend tried to get help yesterday (Clair) regarding electric and fuel pump probs with the 84, but could find no reference to it today. Don't have an email address so do this at public library. Is email address required? No. That would be a bit snooty, would'nt it? Is anyone out there? Thanks if ya help. Bahhumbug if not.

    Marie -

With an email address you get answers there as well as on the BrickBoard.

    No need to search around.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

    Marie,

First off, I think you mean B230 not B30 ? As Don said, the B30 is a 6 cyl from the '60s and 70's 164 model. Totally different beast. Easy-to-make mistake.

If both the engines are tired and smokey, I can't see the point of trying to adapt the B230 head to the B21. The bore sizes are different anyway (B230 is 96mm, B21 is 92mm). You'll have a lot of hassle just to end up with something that's no better. Better off looking for a good B21 or rebuilding the present engine.

Claire has received one reply so far.

What is "snooty" about having an e-mail address?

Most of us here on BrickBoard would definitely be described as "out there".

If this helps; don't mention it.

If it doesn't; bahhumbug to you too :)

YIKES! Thanks for the wrist-slap. Didn't know masochism was lurking in my subconscious. Er, missed the response to Clair. Nothing. Couldn't find response to Clair..thought it might be because we had no e-mail address to profer..that might be "snooty" But, uh, oy vey. The 84 4cyl has very good body..wanted to find a way to put 81 cis in her. The 81 B21 engine doesn't smoke. How (can we?) fit B21 CIS into 84? I bow out with thanks, having been chastized before the quadzillions of brickers.

        Marie,

No wrist slap or chastisement intended. I've just got a weird sense of humour :)

Clair's posting has gone from the "normal" index - you'll need to set the "Preferences" towards the top of the index page to include earlier posts to get it back. Here's the reply she had from Roy H. anyway:

"The most likely problem is that the fuel pump relay is not working. Even if you hear it clicking, it may have burned contacts inside not allowing the circuit to be completed. The fuel pump relay also supplies the power to the injectors on that year Volvo. You must have the circuit working properly in order for the car to run. The relays are located in the passenger side under dash area. They are square metal enclosures about 1in X 1in X 1/2 in. There are two of them in that location. One controls the fuel pump, the other turns on other circuits of the computer"

If that doesn't help, she could try re-posting. Include as much detail as possible, while keeping it reasonably succinct.

Putting the B21 CIS engine in the '84 would be a fairly big bit of a job - the main fuel pump has to be changed (cis uses a higher pressure pump), plus there'd be quite a few wiring and fuel line things to sort out (I think cis engines use higher pressure rated flexible fuel lines). Not impossible but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort. It'd have less power too.

        Cheers

"...get an inexpensive 84 B30E jetronic automatic..."

I'm probably the only person on this board who doesn't understand a B30E in an '84......

That is, the B21 is an overhead cam 4 cylinder...... the B30 is a pushrod 6 cylinder..... fitting the B30 head on a B21 block will be a MAJOR accomplishment, just short of he Nobel Prize for World peace........ That is, fitting it so it runs.......

Well, it was and interesting question..........

Okay... You are not the only one that is confused slightly. Am I the only one around here that believes my 1984 240 DL has got the B23F 2.3 engine with the 2.0 LH Jetronic FI system? In fact, my Bentley clearly states no B230s until 1985. I know the 23 and the 230 are similar in appearance but internally slightly different. I think that it must be a nightmare to use a CIS FI on a 23F engine. I wouldn't know the answer for sure, but I'd imagine they are toally different in layout alone, not to mention functionality.

      Good luck however...

      Jay

        Jay --

"Am I the only one around here that believes my 1984 240 DL has got the B23F..."

I think everyone believes an '84 240 has the B23 engine, unless it's a turbo (which would have the B21FT with K-jet). In the US your '84 would have the B23F with LH 2.0.

"...it must be a nightmare to use a CIS FI on a 23F engine..."

Mostly 'cause of the injectors. The K-jet injectors mount in the head, LH is the intake manifold. I suppose you could move the B21 head and intake to the B23.....

The K-jet is simpler, but when ya gotta work on it, everything's buried.

Thank you, gentlemen. Think we will Bon Ami the rings in the 84 and fix all. Semi joke. Sorta. Oh, no. It's a 3 cylinder.

      Hmmm...... 200 8184

[[Looks at 245 s**t hauler with wheezy B21 E and BW 35. Swings round and looks at lovely rebuilt B30E with M400 4 speed manual in somewhat ratty 164. Starts to ponder.]]

Where's that tape measure. This could get interesting.
