What to do with a crunched P1800ES? 1800 1973

I have a buddy who owns this car. He found out the hard way why teenagers have the highest insurence rates. His son ran into the back of a pickup at about 30 mph. He had only liability insurance. It missed the bumpers but crunched the headlights, grill, and both "fenders" are pretty bad back to about mid wheel well. Hood is ok, It will need a radiator, and AC condenser most likely. He found a front "clip" from another car for $600, but has been advised it is a tough job to replace. Is this now a parts car? or a project for someone with a lot of time on their hands. The numbers don't seem to add up for a repair, but he is worried he will get nothing out of it as is. Hmmmmmmmmm, what to do?

    /// Where is the car, what state? If there is no interest there he won't get much no matter what he does. On these old classics the money invested must be driven out in milage and satisfaction with the ownership. It usually is not a saleable commodity. Expect to get back twenty percent of the repair costs.

    If it is or isn't a parts car depends on how good the car was to begin with. If it was a good car (running well, nice interior/paint, no rust, well kept) $600 for a front clip isn't too bad, and budget on another $1000 or several nights of time or so to put it (it is, as far as I'm aware, more complicated than doing the same on an amazon or 140 due to the more complicated shape and everything being welded rather than bolted), and paintwork at least up to the A pillar (ie. matching that front clip to the rest of the car).

    On a nice P1800 that kind of expense is definately worth it. If it was a rusty, run down, smoking old beater anyway, I'ld at least think about it a bit longer.

        Mark;

        If it is only bodywork which is twanged (not Xmember etc.) a repair/restauration would be something to consider...I dont need to remind you that they only made about 8000, and it would be a shame to send another one to the crusher...or boneyard for picking over anyway...especially if you have the reasonably priced repair nose lined up already.

        Regards
