IPD Exhaust Header Clearance and Electrical Work 120-130 1968

I've got a 1968 122S wagon with dual SU carbs and I'm thinking of purchasing an IPD header and I'm hoping someone out here has put one on before. Are there any clearance problems, ie. generator? Also, does the early style intake manifold mate up to the new exhaust header cleanly? I will have to switch from my one peice intake/exhaust header to the IPD and early style manifold/header. Are there any problems with the carb linkages as a result of this change? If you have put one of these headers on before, was there a performance increase? or not noticable? I'm also thinking of switching from a generator + regulator to an alternator. I know it's possible but I don't know what is involved. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to e-mail me. (bdavies@accglobal.net)Thanks.

    The best part about those headers is you can point to them and say "Them's hedders!" Honestly, the dual outlet system is quite good and performs just about as well. The individual runner lengths are about the same, and it fits! As Matt said, the header and upper A-arm do not fit together well. When everythings installed, it's just dandy. Trying to remove it is another story. You can't pull the header back enough to get it off the studs with the engine in situ.

    Also, get it coated like Ron said. I used Restomotive (makers of POR-15) high temp exhaust paint and had the displeasure of watching it all bubble and flake off the first week or so I drive my car.

    There are other people that make headers, too.

    Re: IPD Exhaust Header Clearance and Electrical Work 120-130 1968

    I put a set of them in my 1800...switching from the original single downpipe, and yes, there was a (fairly minor) performance increase...and to be honest, I will never do it again.

    Admittedly, the 1800 is a good bit tighter under the hood, but I ran into some minor clearance problems with the upper A-arm, getting the header in was a total pain, and now simple jobs are harder...such as removing the cyl head, or changing the oil. It also almost eliminates the possibility of a delco alternater conversion should you ever choose to do so.

    If you've got a stock engine, I would recommend you just go with a stock dual downpipe exhaust. Its almost as good, and if you've got the 1 piece intake/exhaust manifold, you probably already have the twin downpipe. If you want to do a total rebuild, have appropriate carbs and cam, and plan to run the thing at high revs and really want high rev power....then sure, go for it. If its just a pleasure car, I would think your money would be better spent on....??

    Good luck either way...

    Brad;

    You are probably aware that when installing a header, you will need to change from the one-piece intake/exhaust manifold to an earlier intake manifold, but this will have the added result of less heat-soak caused hotstart problems. Be sure not to forget to reinstall the carb heat-shield.

    To answer your Qs: You can expect to run into NO generator/alternator interferences, and carb linkages will also change over to the new intake manifold without difficulties. Check SwEm site for a proven alt. upgrade kit (and get your Qs about it answered...link below). I'll refrain from blowing my own horn further about it here!

    You will definately notice a performance increase by improving the breathing (moreso at the high end), and significantly more still if you open up the rest of the exhaust sys. ZH metering needles should work well with a C camshaft., others (or IPD) might suggest needles best suited for other cams.

    Finally some advice: Have the header coated with a coating better than HT paint, which wont last. Your spending good money for the header...might as well have it stay looking nice (and the thin tubing WILL rust through...its certainly a lot thinner than the OE castings)! I prefer HPC over Jetcoat, which I've seen fail way before it should have (maybe bad prep...whatever).

    Cheers!
