Home made bushing removal tools.. Anyone got any plans?? 200 1986

Ok,

I am ready to just spend money on the tools needed to replace the rear suspensions in all of my cars.

The 86 is lose and clunky, and my 91 is going to need them regardless.

So, I'm curious if any of you have fabricated your own trailing arm bushing removal devices. I would like to save some money if its possible to not buy the Volvo tool.

At 20 dollars/pressing at the local shop, I think I'm just going to buy a press from Northern tools or Harbor Freight..

Someone recommended a 12 ton press, but would a 6 ton press get the bushings out of the torque rods??

Thanks for any advice. I know I bother you guys a lot, but this is the coolest place on the net :)

Where the answer to every car problem isn't "Buy a new car"

Later,

Luke

    Luke -

    As an alternative to creating your own tool, there's a guy called Duane Hoberg (a regular if infrequent contributor to the BB) who has the factory tool... he rents it out for $35 + shipping. He's worked with a local machine shop and made a couple subtle modifications to it that make it very efficient to use... I used it just a couple weeks ago with very good results.

    If you plan accordingly, you could rent the thing and do both cars at the same time (well, ok, not at EXACTLY the same time).

    If your goal is some sort of self-edification through making your own tool, then that's great, go for it! I wish you complete success. However if your goal is to merely get the bushings replaced in your cars, you may want to consider contacting Duane.

    BTW, he usually goes by the moniker, "The OD Guru".

    Just a thought.

    Homemade plans did circulate somewhere a couple of years ago when brickboard hadn't been born yet and its predecessor "vcoa-list" was still alive. I have no idea if I still have them saved somewhere.

    I usually use appropriately sized sockets. I got them from an army surplus sale (you'ld be surprised what size sockets are used for maintaining tanks), but any decent quality sockets will do. If you buy (yardsale?) Craftsman or similar you could even take them back if between the press, the bushing and the socket the socket turned out to be the weekest part.

    6 ton will _probably_ get the torque rod bushings out, but depending on how rotten they are might not be enough for the trailing arm bushings. I've heard of cases where a 12 ton press wasn't sufficient and people had to find someone with a 20 or 30 tonne press. If the price difference isn't too great, I'ld say go for at least the 12 tonne press.

    Bram

      Actually, are there any pictures of the Volvo tool?>

      Mainly I would just use the press to get the torque rod bushings out

      and devise some sort of threaded rod driven puller to get at the torque rods (leaving them on the car)

      but I don't have a full understanding of what the volvo tool entails..

      couldn't you just make a device (excust the ASCII art) that looks like:

      pulling side:

      nut small socket

      -----

      --- | |

      //---// |/////////////////////////////

      --- |_____|

      and then have for the receiving side:

      larger piece of pipe to fit the bushing into

      ____________________

      | | ||

      | | || ---

      /////| |//||///---///

      | | || ---

      |____________________| ||

      pipe washer nut (to be wrenched on)

      a couple flat washers to use for support

      and a big nut to wrench on to pull your socket thru the trailing arm?

      Or am I totally dreaming here? :)

          Luke,

          I printed out within the last 4 months? A "Homebrew Volvo Trailing Arm Bushing Tool". 5 pages, can't find in archives, should have been triple starred.It lists parts needed and how to use.( I haven't gotten to it yet)

          Contact persons listed: Neal Wilcer, Jim Holst, and/or Don Foster. If you can't get it, I'll copy and send to you. email me.

            Rick -

            It's Neal Wilcer, bless his heart, that put up the 6 pages on that tool.

            Try www-ese.fnal.gov/People/wilcer/volvo_trailing_arm_bushing_tool.htm

            This is definitely a triple-star item.

            Good Luck,

            Bob
