Wisdom from the mount, please? Must replace engine mounts 200 83T

OK, I need to replace the engine mounts in my 83 242 Turbo, mileage unknown (over 200K).

Question is, how labor intensive is this project? I was led to believe the clutch replacement wouldn't take the 18 hours that it did. :)

Also, I found the engine mount kit from GAPA (whom I trust implicitly) for like 10 bucks, but they don't say what is included in this "kit." What parts am I looking for (I might as well replace all of them while I'm down there)? And what else should I do while I'm under there? And is it feasible to do this without disturbing the wiring harness too much? It's a little fussy, especially in the impending superhumid Kentucky summer.

Thanks,

Maggie

If it's an oily, greasy mess, then take the car to a spray car wash and blast the grease and crud off with the high pressure wand. Take a roll of quarters too.

Re: Wisdom from the mount, please? Must replace engine mounts 200 83T

    Maggie -

I got a small hydraulic jack and put a piece of 2 x 4 across the oil pan for the jack to push on. That way I could raise or lower the engine as needed from where I was under the car.

The job is messy because you really have to scrape off a lot of greasy road dirt from around the lower mount holders just to find the bolts. Lots of newspapers advised.

I undid the bolts holding to the cross member on both sides, lifter the engine enough to unload the mounts, and loosened the bolts holding the upper mount holdrs onto the block. Then I did the right side first. It might have been easier to do the left first.

The trans mount is an important thing to change, too. Again a lot of scraping off road crud. Jack up trans a little, you can then drop the cross member (4 bolts) and then it's a snap.

It seems that the trans mount may be the cause of the problem. It gets all that oil and grease and ATF and antifreeze and junk blown back on it and it gets a little squishy. That allows the engine to shift back a little, putting undue strain on the motor mounts, and , well..... here we are !!

    Good Luck,

    Bob

PS, I sent you an eBay auction for a 245 Ti in Louisville. It looks interesting.

Thank you! It's beautiful! It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine (assuming I can liquidate that much cash that quickly). Can I put my perfectly good manual transmission into that car?

      Thanks for the advice, too.

      Maggie

I'd say, off hand, not too tough. I recently did a right side motor mount in about an hour, but nothing went too badly wrong...

I'm not sure what would be in a "kit". As far as I can tell, all I'd get would be two mounts. They are rubber cylinders with a stud sticking out each end. There should be nuts, and maybe even washers on the studs when you buy them. Maybe that constitutes a kit?

You are going to have to lift the engine up a little. I used a jack under the bell housing, but others have other methods. Do one side at a time. Removing the oil filter will make the right side go better, and make a little more mess...

When you did the clutch, did you replace the transmission mount? If you didn't, you probably will have to, as the new mounts will raise the engine, and may start another vibration. Don't mind me. It's just Eyoreism.

Yes. That would be the Eyore that I had in mind. You will recall that he had a slightly pessimistic outlook. Eyoreism: The glass is half empty.

Did you catch the link between Patton and Bradley?

          Test question.

          Yes, this belongs in Opinions.

To the optimist, the glass is half full.

To the pessimist, the glass is half empty.

To the re-engineering consultant, there is too much glass.

And, hey, Maggie, beer doesn't help. This is something I was told as a college student, back when beer was new. I believe it now.

Beer good. Beer for after the car surgery. Beer before car surgery mean malpractice.

                Bullsh^t. Beer helps a lot.

And you listened? Ohhh, mannnn...... wanna buy a bridge?

Listened? Not me! I figured that the beer kept the skinned knuckles from hurting. Wasn't until years later that I learned that if I saved the beer for later, I didn't skin my knuckles.

Buy a bridge? No thank you. I still have enough of my own teeth.

Re: Wisdom from the mount, please? Must replace engine mounts 200 83T

It's fairly easy. Jack the car up, remove the neg battery cable too. Support the car with jack stands. Loosen the motor mounts on one side. jack up the engine and undo that one side. They are solid mounts, yes?

Remvoe the mount and the part which attaches to the crossmember. Replace the rubber mount and attach it to the engine loosley. Lower the engine making sure the bolts align with the holes in the mount and tighten the bolts. Now do the same to the other side.

You might also want to check the trans mount as well. Since the car is up, you might want to do this too.

You might run into the problem I did. Now that the engine and trans are aligned prperly and not skewed due to a work motor mount, the driveshaft will be unloaded and the center bearing may also need replacing.

    Watch you fingers!

    Good luck

I did this on my 744Ti with solid mounts. Not hard at all. The clearances are a little tight due to the turbo.
