failed emissions / hydrocarbon output? 200 1990

Hello all! Any info would be greatly appreciated...

My 1990 240dl is failing the hydrocarbon output on the emissions test (Illinois).

Does anyone have suggestions? I have a trusted mechanic, but he's not of Volvo bent, so I thought there may be some Volvo quirks he's not familiar with...

Thanks.

Vic

How far above limits is the reading? Be sure to post whether it's an idle test or on a dyno (rollers) and the readings of all other gasses.

Unburned hydrocarbons (HC) is generally from weak spark (ignition system) or fuel mixture too weak to ignite (leaks into manifold). If the reading is highest at low speed, suspect a tear in the intake manifold gasket or cracked O-rings around 1 or more injectors. Higher speed is more likely worn/incorrectly gapped spark plugs or a bad plug wire.

If CO and HC are both slightly high, you may have a tired catalytic converter.

the test was done on a dyno; it appears that the HC peaked when at high speeds, if I read their poorly documented graph correctly...

The HC reading was 1.51, and the standard 8.0 (gpm).

the CO reading was just under the standard...

perhaps the catalytic converter could be at fault, given that it had a funky resonation three, maybe four months ago...

      Thanks,

      Vic
