Loud Brakes! 200 85

Imagine a 400 lb. table scooting across a hardwood floor. This is beyond a screach. It sounds like an eighteen wheeler. I recently replaced the front pads with Raybestos pads. I should have been patient and waited for a set of PBR's. Would my car (recent buy) originally have had shims that were left off along the way? Would this correct some if not all of the vibration? The rotors look almost new and I loaded the backs of the pads with brake quiet. Any suggestions would be greatly valued.

Thanks,

Mark

/// Did you have the rotors turned? I found a site that has the terms definitions copyright statement credited to Bently. I didn't recoginze the author. It covered brake noise and suggested that squeal is high speed chatter from the rotors being incorrectly surfaced. Failure to polish the finished rotor leaves a groove like the old 33 1/3 albums. This attempts to move the pad in or out depending on the direction of travel.

Try fine sand paper in circular spot movement around the rotor to remove the fine thread.

Some where on that site there was the recommendation that rotors do not need turning unless grooves and ridges are higher/deeper than the space between FDR's head and the edge of a dime.

If there are grooves and ridges the noise may continue until the pads wear in and seat to the rotor.

What I do is before putting the new pads on, I take a wood file and dull the sharp corners off the edges of the pads. Just one or two swipes with the file does it. They also sell a spray that you spray on the backs of the pads to absorb some noise so it doesn't resonate and get amplified through the car. Take a half hour and pull them off and break those edges I hope you are pleasantly surprised

Personally I never bother changing my pads without having the disks turned as well. Around here that's $15 a pair and pads and rotors last longer brake better. Also, your note doesn't make it clear if the noise is only from the front, obvioisly if the back pads are finished change them too.

If the noise comes from the front and is not pad releted I would take a look at the bearings (adjustment, grease, races if there was no grease)

Good Luck and happy travels, Patrick
