Cooling my Wagon in hot summers? S90-V90 1997

I have a V90 wagon which has been awesome so far. However, the reason I swapped this for my 850 GLT sedan was my two large dogs. The problem I have is getting cold air to the back of the wagon. What do people do if they have children in the third seat and they live in a hot climate? It is so hot back there. The A/C works wonderfully in the rest of the car. So, I am freezing in the front with all the vents pointed to the rear and the dogs are overheating in the back.

I have researched extensively and have talked with several people at a local (very large) dealership. They said there are air vents in the very back that are activated when the vent is turned to the bi-directional air flow (not on Auto). I tried this and don't feel any air at all in the back. They also suggested tinting the windows, which I am seriously considering.

The 2001 models have vents on the posts beside the front driver and passenger headrests, but I'm not convinced this will get air to the back. Also, I love my RWD and this car in general, so I'd like to keep it.

Any tips on cooling the rear and living in the south. I have to transport these dogs as they are working animals as well as vet visits and such.

I, too drive around with my 2 Golden Retrievers & a Golden/Husky mix in my dark teal 965.

To solve that particular problem, I put the back seat down & cover everything with a waterproof 'HatchBag' & extra carpet to allow them to get closer to the front where it is cooler. The sunroof gets cracked open for circulation. I do not need a doggy fence/divider since they are trained to stay out of the front seats at all times. They each lay in their own particular spot.

I am toying with the idea of window tinting, also...

      natalie,

you may want to get a fence/divider that will fit behind the front seats, just because in an accident your beloved dogs may wind up flying through you on their way out the windsheild, not good for you or them. Dog safety is an important cosideration (as is people safety). Oh well at least you aren't carrying them loose in the back of a pick-up truck :)

I just had the windows tinted in my black 940 (35% tint) and it made a substantial difference on the cooling...Looks good too!

I have a 960 wagon, 965, and I was thinking the same thing. Tinting is definitly in the works for me. I have kids who sit in the rear sometimes.

My family and I were in Chicago several years ago during 4th of July and we took a cab ride. The car had the devider between the driver and the passengers. Several flexible plastic tubes were rigged to send cold air to the rear section and were exposed. This method would work but would not look very nice.

My only question is, why? The dogs don't really care and will just pant a more, unless they have really bad breath that is.

Well I guess living in Georgia with temps outside around 95+ degrees in the summer makes the interior of a car pretty hot. Add 10 degrees to the interior and it is too hot for animals to ride in without overheating.

My car is not garaged, so it takes a long time to get cool enough for them to ride. My husband has a company issued sport ute that has a vent in the back - and it's awesome. I just don't want to drive a SU, especially in Atlanta, where you take your life in your hands every day. Any city for that matter.

From what I recall there is supposed to be a vent in the back of the wagon (the cargo area) in the floor( there definately was supposed to be in the 740 wagons) if you feel no air coming from it no matter what the position you could check to see if it has been detached or plugged up somehow (or if the flap that opens to allow air to it isn't malfunctioning). tinting probably isn't a bad idea either. Cracking the windows slightly while you are driving (and/or tilting up the sunroof) may help the air circulation too. Good luck

Consider a pickup truck. Nice place for you, OK place for Spot and Fido.
