Clean engine block? 700 1985

Has anyone cleaned their engine block themselves; if so, would you tell

me what you used. Any areas to avoid?

Thank you,

Bob H.

Make sure your engine is COLD before you do this... spraying tons of cold water on a hot block/turbo is never good... its like driving through standing water with hot brakes.

Just did so myself on my 164. Sprayed the block (and engine bay/hood, due to previous spray from the filler cap and cover gasket) with degreaser, some no-name greenish stuff. Gunk works better but smells worse. Then I had a party with a pressure washer. Started up just fine. First time I did that to this engine (about a year ago) it didn't, which provided a good impetus to fix anything unreliable.

I spray the foamy engine cleaners all over the engine compartment. I don't cover anything and after I hose it down, the car always starts.

I confess...I gunk the whole thing and hose the sucker down too.

If it doesn't start, it's not reliable enough (and certainly not waterproof enough!) to drive!

That being said, I've had my share of times when a bit of water got into the distributor cap (although not on rear distributor volvos...knock on wood) and the gunk/water trick could be why the ignition amplifier went (washed out the dielectric grease between the heatsink and the amp but that could also have been due to 14 yrs age...).

So..........gunk away, but be aware of potential problems. Keep a dry cloth and a can of WD-40 on hand!

Cool man! I'll have to get out my heatsink grease and slather it on. Not much cooling available in the engine compartment. Better rig up a tube to pipe in fresh air, maybe one of those little PC cpu fans too. Then again, maybe not.

The most important thing you can do is cover the distributor and cap as well as the coil when you clean the block. Moisture is no good there. Plastic bags and rubber bands do the trick.

I had to clean my block not long ago to find a leak. I used a off the shelf cleaner called "gunk" i think in a yellow can. You spray it on the engine (try and avoid or remove soft rubber/plastice parts) let it do its thing and hose it off. It seemed to work well. I have heard that u can get it profess. steam cleaned also.
