DLC/Check Engine light refuses to obey my command! 700 1989

While I will never win the coveted "Sharpest Knife in the Drawer" Award, I know how to follow instructions. In this case, I'm trying to extinguish my CE light after cleaning some connections (AMM and such).

With the male wire end in socket #2, I press and hold down the DLC button for 5 seconds and release. Theoretically, at this point, the red LED light should come back on, then I should press it again for another 5 seconds and release, and this should clear the light and sensor. I've a pretty good idea that I'm on the right track, as this worked swimmingly with the male wire end in socket #6. But when I hold down the button for 5 seconds and release....nothing, no LED, no blinking, no nothing. What gives? Am I doing something wrong? Fault codes 2-3-2 and 1-2-1 still remain. Most frustrating.

Thanks in advance for any input.

When reading and reseting, you must read all codes once, then read again till one code repeats, eg, 232, 121, 232. The system won't clear till the first code read repeats. This is to make sure all codes have been read. Also try holding a couple seconds longer when clearing.

Re: DLC/Check Engine light refuses to obey my command! 900 1991

Hi

My brick is 940GLE. I had similar problem way back when I bought the car as secondhand last year. It turn out to be that when I push in the DLC into socket #2 or #6, the wires inside the sockets which are covered with plastic cover is being pushed downward hence breaking the connection. Because mine was such an old car, the rubbery cover for the wires had been baked in the engine compartment and chipped away. This made the wires inside the OBD to loosen and when the DLC is inserted, the wires inside the OBD simple slip downwards thus preventing connection.

Hope this helps. If your connection inside the OBD is good, then I have no other ideas.

been there. Sometimes I find it easier to disconnect the battery, will screw up the radio, but worth the aggravation.
