Rotor break in Period 200 1989

Hey, I just got some new ATE Atomic Rotors today(will get them put on tomorrow). The PBR pads I got gave instructions for breaking them in, but the rotors don't. Proper break in methods for these babies? I would like to keep them as long as I can.

BTW, does this ATE/PBR combination sound ok? I hope it does.

Thanks Alot

RTFM!

The literature that came with my new rotors said DO NOT clean off the anti-corrosion coating.

I believe(I don't have the literature close at hand) you should take it easy for 200km(~120 miles). Use the instructions for the pads.

Which PBR pads did you get? The Deluxe have good feel in normal driving, but fade badly when hot. I used ~3/4 of a set in ~ 1hr. at the track a couple of weeks ago; the rims were ugly.

MetalMasters aren't so good first stop of the day, but they don't fade much. I just put a set on my 744T(with ATe Power Disk rotors) to replace the wasted Deluxe ones.

That SEEMS weird...why wouldn't they want you to clean this oily stuff off?

It' not oily. In fact, it's undetectable.

Aha!! So they changed the "typical" coating and it must now have some beneficial effect for the break in process.

Re: Rotor break in Period 200 1989

My Ah-Tays (ATe) groovy rotors did come with a little pamphlet...but that was over three years ago now. As I recall (I have the pamphlet thing in the 245Ti file, but I'm at work) it said TEN sucessive GENTLE stops in a straight line with PLENTY of cool down (like a mile) between each stop. No hard emergency stops and NO riding the brakes.

Also I just bought some Brembo's for the 850 and it seems the instructions were similiar but I don't think it said 10 stops. They broke in nicely with new PBR Deluxe and have been working great for over a week now and NO more stock dust on that car.

Your combo SHOULD work ok but your question is a good one...timely for me too. My current combo is: ATe's (groovy, ventilated) and FERODO pads (NLA). They stop on a DIME with 9 cents change. Scary good braking. It's a shame they are NLA. The only drawback: They are three times as dusty as STOCK!!! (no kidding) Wheels black in 2 days.

Why timely? I just bought the PBR's (Deluxe) to install on the 245Ti next week, because after 3 years the Ferodo's are reaching the end. There is some life left in them, but I want to change before driving down to the IPD garage sale. So, I'll see how they break in with USED ATe atomics!!!

Re: Rotor break in Period 200 1989

be careful... i had this combination (on different pads now) and the break-in period was scary, to say the least. others seem to have not had this problem, but i experienced what they call "green fade". severe fade. green fade refers to new pads and when they're brand new they put out a lot of gasses from the binding agents in there. new rotors don't yet have a proper surface for the pads to grip on. in my experience, the combination was a little too much. i've never experienced it with other brake jobs (new rotors and pads on different cars, including Textar/Brembo on my mom's 245).

the feeling was like boiling brake fluid or massive system failure. almost ran thru a stop sign, all the while pushing the brake pedal to the floor (almost), out of my seat just trying to pull the steering wheel off.

no air in the lines. just some PBR deluxe pads that smelled real bad and would NOT do ANYTHING in the way of braking. i guess i got them too hot, but they really took a long time to break in properly and not give me any more fade problems. oh, yeah, my rotors are solid and i think this does not help! esp. with the PBR deluxe, once they're hot they fade fast. just a word of warning to take your time on those brakes!

good luck

Re: Rotor break in Period 200 1989

Clean off the 'film' of the new rotors with brake cleaner. They are coated to prevent rust while on the shelf.

When you finish with everything. Press the brake pedal a couple times to seat the pads. Then inspect the calipers to make sure nothing broke or flew out.

I think you are suppose to avoid harsh braking for a few hundred miles on the new rotors. Just drive normally.
