Back-up lights stopped working!!

Have a '88 240 and back-up lights are not working. The fuse is OK, replaced both bulbs and cleaned bulb holders, and cleaned ground connections. No luck. Any ideas where to look next. Thanks

    Re: Back-up lights stopped working!!

The back up lights on my '87 240 w/M47 stopped working a long time ago. Several months later I was backing up at night and had to wait for a car to go by, and then I noticed two white reflections coming from the car. My back up lights had returned! I have no idea what the problem was, but I didn't do anything and they came back and have worked ever since (at least 6 months). The circuit cards in the taillights are easily worn, so if you see silver on the copper section, that may be the problem (but unlikely that both would go out at the same time). Have someone put the car in reverse while you jiggle the lights to see if you can get them to come on. Every so often I have a taillight go out, and moving the bulb holder usually fixes it. If that doesn't work, then I'd bet on the switch.

    Good luck.

    Re: Back-up lights stopped working!!

    John -

Manual trans or automatic? If automatic the switch is part of the Neutral-Park switch located in the well at the base of the shifter rod. It's a tricky fix but easier than when the trans switch goes out on an M-46/47.

If manual check the connection at the trans switch. It's mounted high on the trans left side towards the front. The connector on the wire can get messed up and not make contact.

Repost with what trans you have.

    Good Luck,

    Bob :>)

      Re: Back-up lights stopped working!! 700 86

I have that problem with an automatic 760 turbo (86). I am covined it is the switch because both backup lights go on when I push the gearshift lever forward. Please, let me know how to fix it. Thank you.

        Refael -

Now you are off my turf. I am a 240 guy, and I believe that the 700 sries has differences in the neutral-park switch area. Your getting lights by pushing on the shift handle points to that switch, but I have no books or experience with your car.

I suggest you re-post with a subject line asing about start inhibiter switch, that's what it's called in my 240 Bentley manual.

        Good Luck,

        Bob... :>)
