Re: Well, I got 23.5mpg on my old B20F. Man that thing sure spins... 200 1975

When I bought my first 4-spd '75 -- back in '76 -- that was exactly my reaction. So I bought an OD tranny, shortened the driveshaft, shifted the crossmember, tossed in the tranny -- and dropped the RPM by about 25%. I thought it was worth every penny. As I recall, I paid $300 for the transmission back then.

If IPD still sells exhaust headers for the B20, give 'em some thought. They'll change the performance and change the sound. (I think I still have several sets hanging around waiting for my next project car...)

      Hi Don,

You mentioned in this thread about exhaust headers for a 75 B20.

Can you expand on your thoughts on this point? I've never given much thought on this, but any performance perks at this point in her life is worth considering.

      Thanks Gregg 75 Brick NYC

Re: Well, I got 23.5mpg on my old B20F. Man that thing sure spins...

        Gregg --

At one time, and maybe still, IPD sold a very nice header set for the pushrod engine. It came in two flavors -- one for carbs, and one for FI. I used a set on my '75 245 with the stock engine and again later when I "warmed up" the motor.

On the stock engine, the headers pushed the torque curve up at the expense of low-end power, although it was not really a problem. And headers give you a distinctive crisp "pingy" sound. Where I really noticed the improvement was the pull from 3500 to 7000 rpm.

Installation was easy -- it bolts right up. The collector end of the headers was sized to fit the stock Volvo exhaust pipe near the crossmember, although I had to sacrifice a stock exhaust pipe to fit into the collector.

After 5-6 years, the headers rotted through at the collector. But I still have these headers and could weld a new pipe at the end. I also bought a replacement header set, still unused, which I'm saving for a "someday" project.

If you want a quick performance improvement, remove your engine fan. Reinstall the nuts on the pump pulley.... use the heater if you get stuck in traffic, or install an electric fan. You'll immediately gain about 10 hp, lower your noise, lower the vibration. (Of course, in NYC you may get stuck in a lotta traffic..... and you might prefer low-end torque to high-end power. The "A" cam's good for pulling stumps.....)

I used to install the fan in June-July and remove it in September-October.

    Re: Overdrive 200 1975

    Mark,

At 70mph in 4th gear, my '86 244 (B230F) runs at 3200-3300rpm. In OD, about 2500rpm. Mileage is 23-24mpg in 4th, and 28-29mpg with the OD on. 30-31 on a long trip with a light foot. Not bad for a 16 year old car.

It should be possible to put an M41 overdrive transmission in your '75. I believe that this tranny and engine combo were used in the 1800 for a few years.

No, you can't use an M46-it won't bolt up to your B20. The B21/23/230 engines are slanted (versus inline) and tranny is installed in similar fashion.

      Re: MPG question 200 1990

I purchased a used '90 240 (B230F, non-turbo, auto trans) last year. It averages 22.5 mpg in mixed city/highway driving, with OD, easy on the pedal. Mileage has NEVER been over 25 mpg, even when taking 1-hr highway trips to visit friends. I thought it was in good tune (new filters, plugs and wires, no fluid leaks), but I'm envious when I read you high-mpg statemet!

Does a manual transmission make that much of a difference in mpg on a 240? Do you have air conditioning? What could be causing "low" mileage in my car?

        Re: MPG question 200 1990

Mine is the same as yours (89, auto), 23 mpg with mixed driving, tires at 36psi. Tuned. I'm suspecting the O2 sensor.

          Re: MPG question 200 1990

I am suspecting that these high mileage reports are due mostly to a real "light foot". I get between 20 and 25 depending on the type of driving and my '87 245 (5sp) is in perfect tune. I don't drive contemplating gas mileage. I can't see getting 30 mpg unless you cruise at 60 or so on the Hwy. I drive 80 if traffic allows and therefore I guess mileage suffers.

            Re: MPG question (Diesel)

Why does my diesel mileage increase in the summer and drop in the winter?Warmer air or change in fuel recipe? I understand cold climate diesel has kerosine added. I'm getting as low as 32mpg winter and 39 mpg summer so far on a rebuilt D24.
