High Pitch Sound 200 1990

High Pitch sound coming from engine compart. Increases with speed and of course decrease with decrease in speed. Someone said it could be a bearing on the alternator. Doesn't do it all the time. Any ideas what I need to be looking for? Need to drive the car this weekend about 500 miles.

Wondering?

Re: High Pitch Sound 200 1990

Thanks everyone. Waterpump good and tight. Alternator pulley out of alignment. I'll drive the other one, instead of putting strain on the bearings. Fix when I get back. Thanks again,

Joe

Re: High Pitch Sound 200 1990

Joe, look at the angle of the alternator pully in relationship with the water pump pulleys. What happens on these cars is that the rubber bushings that mount the alternator to it's bracket start to get tired. the tension from the two belts will cause the alternator to twist a bit. two things happen: one of the two belt sis now loose as compared to the other AND the belts are not running true in the pulley grooves. That's where you get your squeek.

Re: High Pitch Sound 200 1990

hi.

I experienced the same type of noise last year on my 82 240. Turned out to be the bearing in the water pump. The way I found it was that I could move the fan, (by hand and engine off), forward and back. In other words, the shaft in the water pump was loose and I could move it. As engine revs got higher, the push from the fan made the parts grind one onto the other to create the whinning. This was more noticable on acceleration.

So, give your fan a jiggle and see if it moves. If so, change the pump before your trip.

Re: High Pitch Sound 200 1990

Had similar sound with my 85 DL and it was the carrier bearing. Would increase and decrease according to speed. Might be worth a look
