Whole in exhaust causing high nox? 200 1984

Hi!

Quick question? Does anyone recommend a good place to take an 84 Volvo to get a new cat. and part of the exhaust system replaced?

We went back to the emissions station, and our nox rose from 3.50 to 7.05. Yuck. I then took it to Midas and they said that we have a small hole in the exhaust right in the weld on the front joint of the catpipe between the engine and the cat. Midas told us our cat. is working fine, but we have our doubts.

1. Could this hole be the reason why we can't pass emissions, and our nox has gone up?

2. Any nation-wide chain known for doing a good job on this type of repair on Volvo's?

Any information would be wonderful!

Thanks so much!

I finally found a link that would relate to you guys. I remember reading about this but I could not figure out where. As the link suggests, I would think you have a crappy cat converter put on my Midas. Get them to put in the right one.

Good exhaust brands are Bosal and Starla. Check out www.alloemvolvoparts.com for competive prices.

Also run some Chevron Techron cleaner. It may help in cleaning up some carbon. I think you can rule out an O2 sensor since your CO and HC numbers are intact. If you do need one, get a universal Bosch one and slice it in.

Do post back and let us know how it resolved.
