suspension 700 1990

I am the proud owner of a 1990 760 GLE in UK (there does not seem to be many modified Volvos here!) I want to uprate and lower the suspension on my 760 saloon. Unfortunately the independent rear suspension is causing problems in finding a kit. I'm told that the Nivomat mountings are the problem. Has anyone carried out the conversion which i have heard a little about to get lowered springs and uprated dampers on all four corners of this car? Is it a safe conversion? does it still mean that the suspension act independently? I'm only looking to lower the car a small amount because i have got 17" wheels. Please help because this could be the start of many more modifications!

Have a look in the 700/900 FAQ under "rear suspension." I put all the information you'll need to de-nivomat your car (and lower it a bit) in there... I did it as a project back in school. Feel free to email me with any questions you may have!

    Re: suspension 700 1990

Herb's right - there is no available replacement for the Volvo IRS spring, and because the spring is tuned for use with Nivomats, it is unsuitable for use with conventional shocks.

Your only hope would be to talk to a shop that can custom-wind springs and see about getting a set made.

The Volvo IRS was designed for comfort, not performance. I imagine it could handle really well, but it would involve a lot of custom parts. And then there's the B280F engine...that is another hindrance altogether.

    Re: suspension 700 1990

Unfortunately the 760GLE is not terribly amenable to tuning the suspension or the engine. There is no easy way to swap out the Nivomats (it has been done by others, but there is no simple part for part swap) and the B280F engine does not have a lot of aftermarket performance parts available for it either.

If you really want performance I would suggest trading your 760 for a 740 turbo with a solid rear axle. Then you can go crazy on the readily available mods!

If you do come across some performance mods, please let us know-- your options may be improved across the "pond"!

    Good luck!
