Re: 1991 240 65,000 miles 1 owner AUTO , USD4,000 good condition no rust 200 1991

THANKS for all the help. I did a CARFAX and there is one very strange thing. The Carfax report says the car has 36 miles at last check. The report only states the miles on the INITIAL title (i.e. purchase date).

All other yearly inspections by the State of Florida don't register milage.

Another strange thing, the inspections cease in 1998. I know for a fact all cars have to be inspected every year (at least until 2000 when the law changed).

Being that this is Miami and more often than not people commit odometer fraud (my 16 year old FEMALE cousin routinely disconnects the thing on her Civic!) I wonder if something is up? I don't know how carfax wouldn't have the STATE's info since they do record your milage at each inspection and carfax lists the inspections but no milage readings.

The car looks fine but hmmmm.. I wonder if it has more miles than they are saying of if something else is going on.

Thanks,

The State of Florida doesn't check mileage... heck, we don't even have a yearly emissions check either, oh yeah... and there's no state income tax, too. :-) I did a CarFax report on my 240 back in January. Carfax found 2 things: 1.) The initial title (55 miles on odometer), and 2.) The title when I got the car (41,xxx miles).

My odometer was stuck at 88,789 miles for just under 2 years until I got it fixed. I thought an "odometer fraud" would should up because the insurance company would report it or something, but nothing transpired. Anyhow, I rolled the odometer up myself about 22,000 miles before I brought it in for a repair -- I figure they were going to replace the gears anyway. :-)

Eric Staufer

Re: 1991 240 65,000 miles 1 owner AUTO , USD4,000 good condition no rust 200 1991

Sweet deal if all looks as it seems. I think the GL skipped 1991 but showed up again for 1992.

The ABS modulator, if so equipped, is a black box right in front of the left strut tower, with a bunch of pipes coming out. If that thing isn't there, forget it.

If it IS an ABS car, make SURE That the ABS warning light comes on when you turn the ign switch to "on", but before starting. Ditto SRS light.

It sounds like a great deal. It's got a drivers side airbag and it should have ABS (tip: if you look at the engine, the power steering fluid reservoir should be mounted right next to the engine if the car has ABS. Otherwise, it's mounted on the drivers side fender). It's not a GL, just a basic 240, unless it's got alloy wheels, then it's a 240SE.

If odometer is correct and working, then the car is a steel. Spend $50 and pay a mechanic familiar with volvos to look it over.

It should not have ABS as a '91, I think, unless it is an 245 SE and it ain't. Don't despair, if there is one car that did not benefit from ABS, it is the 240. Very solid brakes to start with. ABS is just noisy and only 2-piston.

Offer less than $4000? You would not even get a return call from me for my 91 at that price. Same miles and it is the "new car" at our house. If you get it for even less, I don't want to hear about it!

Actually the base model 240 was available with ABS beginning in 1991. The SE model had ABS as standard, as I remember.

I still favor ABS in the snowy climates, vs. non-abs cars. The system IS noisy but it is NOT ineffective. Not quite as sophisticated as the 4-channel ones, but not too bad overall. It has saved my ass a number of times.
