83 244 GL wiring harness - replacement 200 83

I have the typical detioriated engine wiring harness on my 1983 Volvo GL (244, I suppose it is).

Have any normal people (i.e., not expert mechanics) ever tried to replace the wiring harness themselves?

Does anyone have a supplier, or recommendation on where I can buy a wiring harness for a fair price?

My 1983 Volvo GL has A/C, automatic transmission, cruise control, and electric windows. I suppose this information may make some difference on which model engine wiring harness I would require.

Any recommendations, "other solutions", or otherwise remedies from anyone in the cheap-seats would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to anyone with "any" information on this, that you would like to share with me.

v/r,

Tim Grimes

Re: 83 244 GL wiring harness - replacement 200 83

Tim -- sure, it's really not too bad a problem. I can't offer much advice on where to locate an inexpensive replacement. I replaced the harness on my '81 K-jet several autumns ago, and it was actually sort of fun -- just took some time, that's all. The LH-jet on the '83 has more wires involved, more connectors, but the principles are the same. The advantage of rebuilding it yourself, besides the obvious one of saving a bundle of money, is that you can route the wires away from the death trap under the crankshaft pulley. Wires can come out to the fenders and cross to the other side up at the firewall -- this keeps them away from the heat and oil which kills the insulation.

No matter which alternative you choose -- replacement Volvo harness or making your own -- label *everything* with a masking tape and marker label stating its identity and location. Also, you should think of removing the intake manifold (which is really easy in spite of its intimidating appearance) so you can get in underneath and access those wires easily. Plan on installing a new intake manifold gasket, and do the flame trap at the same time.

Simon Eng had information on materials and a description of procedure he posted in the last few months. I received it and subsequently found a good harness at the p&p, so I didn't try it. Sounded well thought out and around $30.00 depending on ability to use what you have at hand. Trty to find him. Good pluck.

Check ebay, type in 240volvo. As for replacing it's pretty straight forward.

You must take off the intake manifold.Someone might have a link to describe.good luck

Re: 83 244 GL wiring harness - replacement 200 83

I've replaced the harness on a few turbos and did my first LH car last

summer. It was an 87 DL. The intake manifold did not need to be removed

to replace the harness. It did on the turbos. Although if you want more

working space by all means remove it. I found it relatively easy to work

around especially after replacing the harness on turbos. I bought my engine

harnesses from IPD. They were around $300 for the LH one for his 87. I

do believe yours is more money because it was a one or two year only

aplication.
