problems removing flame trap 900 1995

tried to remove flame trap hoses on my 1995 940 wagon. Lifted 5 inch hose from breather box ok,but couldnt disconnect the small hose from... the trap assembly..Would be easier to remove threaded fitting that small hose is connected to on the intake manifold. That will allow me to get the housing out from that tight piece of real estate where the damn thing is stashed..... Under fuel rail and adjacent to injector wires. Is this ok or ill adised to disconnect the coupling at the intake mainfold.. See no other way to work in the closed space. Should I have a new plastic trap housing ready to go also??? It appears the larger upper hose is on real tight and may crack the housing... Should I just replace the housing ,hoses and the whole shebang at 60000 miles..No problems with system..just never been cleaned or replaced..Car has had mobil 1 changed every 5k..THANKS JOHN

Re: problems removing flame trap 900 1995

Just take your time. Buy a new flame trap it costs about $5.00 at Volvo or after market for $ 2.50. Do not pull the hose out of the trans or the oil trap ether or you will creat your own headach. I had to drill a hole in my old flame trap in order to remove move it. It is worth taking your time to get the hoses removed from the flame trap valve housing. Warm the engine up just a little and the heat will help to soften the hoses. Hope this helps.

Re: problems removing flame trap 700 1988

Hi John: What I did was remove the flame trap housing, meaning the small vacuum hose, the top hose that the flame trap itself is under, and the bottom hose to the flame trap housing. I then took it in the house and drilled several small holes in threw the flame trap inself and then used needel nose pliers to crush pieces of the old flame trap untill all of it was removed, it took a little while to do this because I didn't want to damage the housing. I then cleaned the recess that the new flame trap would sit. Then I installed the entire housing and all was fine. The flame trap is about 3/4" dia. X 1/2" thick with several holes about 1/16" dia. it is slightly concave. The new one I bought cost $2.50 after market, Volvo wanted $7.00. Call me cheep but I like thrifty better. Please let me know how it is working out, good luck, Dan Metz
