upshift indicator light stays on - how does it work?

All,

The upshift indicator light in my 87 245dl with the m47 5-speed tranny stays on constantly.

I have (1) removed the fuse and driven a number of miles (250, multiple trips) and (2) unhooked and rehooked the battery and driven in each gear for a looong time trying to get it to learn.

These have not worked.

Can anyone tell me how this light works so I can troubleshoot it?

Thanks,

Jack

Jack,This is what the book says “If the current supply to the control unit is cut (battery disconnected), the control unit will have to be re-programmed as the control unit memory will be erased. Drive the car in each gear (first gear not necessary) for approximately 8 seconds. The gear indicator light will flicker once (0.5 seconds), as each gear is programmed. NOTE: Remove the foot completely from the clutch pedal after each gear change when programming the control unit.” Good luck

Also make sure the clutch pedal comes all the way back to the top and activates the switch at the pedal. If the pedal doesn't contact the switch, it won't program.
