Need Cup Holders 200 83

How do I go about putting cup holders in my 83 240GL? Is there an aftermarket product that's available because the dealer tells me that Volvo doesn't make any cup holders for the 240. BTW, is there anyone out there that has jerry-rigged a clever way to have cup holders in their 240?

you can put an inexpensive cup holder in a 240. go to a boat supply place and get one of those swinging cup holders (bar bouys). remove the cigerate lighter in your car. Get a piece of wood, aluminum, etc that is a 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick and about 1 inch square (it is just a spacer). you can then bolt the cup holder plate over the cigerette lighter hole. Adjust the location slightly and the cup holder will fit just right without obstructing anything. (I had this in my 82 wagon for 15 years).

awesome product, but pricey. Had one in my 240 and loved it.

Re: Need Cup Holders 200 83

Recentl;y I saw pictured a home made cup holder that fit on the transmission tunnel between the front console and the shifter.

Might have been in a car for sale on ebay.

A plywood thing, similar to Les's report. More convenient location than the coin shelf, I think. I rectangular piece spanned the tunnel between the console and shifter trim, then the two holders attatched to the ends and were propped up with blocks of wood so they rested on the sides of the tunnel.

As with the set up Les mentions, it was left in natual wood tone. I, myself, would paint it to match the interior color.

I saw this mentioned on the bb a while back. I used a section of thin-wall pvc pipe and an end cap screwed to the tunnel. Cut a slot for the parking brake lever. I can just get my hand inside the holder to use the p-brake. Spray the thing with matching paint and trim with door edge molding. This isn't the optimum cup holder, but so far has worked quite well.

Re: Need Cup Holders 200 83

You know the tray on the top of the center console? The PO of my car made a cup holder that replaces that tray. It's bolted on through the factory holes on the top of th console (just above the rocker switches). It's made out of a decorative maple plywood... wood thickness is about 1/2"... has two holes (for two drinks). He finished it with a high-gloss clear urethane.

Now, I must admit it has a decidely "custom van" feel to it, but it's quite functional, however a large cup in the driver's side somewhat covers the center-mounted instruments (particularly the volt meter & turbo boost).

I'm going through the car, fixing what needs to be fixed. Because of mechanical issues, the interior is relatively low on the priority/money list, but when I do get there, this cup holder will be removed, and the factory tray reinstalled. Part of the reason for getting rid of it is because it's a bit funky (it kinda makes me want to install some smokey heart-shaped rear quarter windows and paint a half-naked mermaid down the sides of the car...), and also because I have a factory armrest/cup holder... it fits over the parking brake console... not installed yet, but it should work very well, too.

Also - IPD has cup holders that appear to attach to a door or other interior panel (they fold up when not in use). IPD advertises them for 740 use, but maybe they could be modified for use in a 240...?

Rotsa ruck.

Re: Need Cup Holders 200 83

The front section of the door pocket works fine for me because I usually have a 12-oz can of something cool and the can fits perfect. Most of my door pockets are reinforced with strap metal and lots of #6-40 x 1/4" brass round-head machine screws.

Good luck, Bob
