replace older alternator w/ new style?? 200 78

I have a 78 242 with the older external regulator alternator. (55A)

The cost to repair it is more than a used newer 70A internal regulator Bosch alternator -actually I have one rebuilt off of one of my parts cars.

Can I use the newer model on the 78?

Do I have to rewire anything??

What do I have to watch out for??

Thanks in advance

Gord Hull

    Thanks All... 200 78

Yes Carl, this is my 2nd alternator in 2 months (2 different cars).

As far as just replacing the brush/regulator unit, the electrical shop said that the "tri-diodes" (something like that) were probably the problem and the parts alone were more than picking up a used alternator.

Thanks for the info, the shop rebuilt the 80 amp alternator , new bearings, brush/regulator, and replaced some kaput diodes, for something around $100 CDN ($65 USD).

So for that amount, I have a good as new unit.

(It is amazing how far one can get with just a battery charger and a good battery under the hood, supplying power.)

    Happy Brikken

That's okay, I can read between the lines. How much is California paying you to make power with your Volvo? Maybe I'll do it too.

Bolt it on. Large red wire is same as old unit. Throw away the regulator and harness. Plug small red wire on spade terminal.

Before you spend a ton, you may be able to do this: Take the alternator to the parts place (dealer or ??) and see if the brush set that contains the built-in regulator will fit. Try B4 you buy, and electrical parts are usually not return-able. I think I did this with my 1979 B21f. Good Luck, Bob.

You can replace it with no problem---did it on a 78 I owned. No particular changes required.
