warm start problem 900 95

In december I wrote about this problem for the first time. I got some replys, but I did not print them out, and canīt find them in the archive either.

The problem:

My 960-95 with 2,5 liter engine wont start at the first attempt. This is only with WARM engine. Cold starts, no problem.

Then, at the second attempt it start immediately.

Now back to the first attempt! It will not start even if you let the start-engine work for one minute! No ignition. It just will not start. Then at the second attempt it starts immediately.

Another thing. If you let the first start attempt last just 1 sec, thne it also start immediately at the second attempt!

Finally; This phenomenon occure only when the enginge has been shut off for at least lets say 10 min or so.

Before I go to the Volvoshop and buy expensive spareparts, that not will do any difference to the problem, I put out this question to the BRICKBOARDS FORUM!

(there is a swedish saying: donīt cross/go ower the creek to get water! But i cross the atlantic for an answer about a Volvo...)

Re: warm start problem 900 95

I have heard that some people have hard starts because of the fuel pump relays, something about cracking solder. There is info in the FAQ's. My own experiences were: 1)hard starts when warm was because of a bad fuel pressure regulator, it was flooding. 2)Then many miles later it occurred again, only it took longer cranks to get started, warm or cold, my intank fuel pump had failed. I was running for about a year on one fuel pump, which then the main pump failed. Hope this may help.

Re: warm start problem 900 95

I have a 94' 960 and does the same. I found that if I trun the key to just before the starter motor cranks you can hear the fuel pump run 1-2 seconds, turn the key 2 or 3 times to build pressure then start. For me it works everytime. I need some servie as I have noticed that the front fuel injector does leak a little from time to ttime. Let me know what happens.

      Re: warm start problem-it works!!! 900 95

Today I tried the method of B. Dowell: turning the key 2-3 times to build pressure. And it did work! The engine started at the first attempt.

But then comes the question what to do? Buy a new fuel pressure regulator?

The fuel system loses pressure, thats for sure. With cold starts thats no problem beacause then extra fuel is injected I belive.

Check your in-tank fuel pump. The pump noise you hear is the main pump under the car. They are designed to work together and if one dies, the other can't quite do the job.
