How much horsepower does the volvo 740, 16 valve engine have? Is it a big difference when compared to the 240 engine? Thanks guys

Jason

The B230F (eight-valve engine used in 240s and 740s) is rated at 114 hp at 5400 rpm, 136 lbs.-ft. of torque at 2700 rpm. The 16-valve engines (B234F) will perform a lot better at higher engine speeds due to better breathing. I've never driven a 16-valve, but I'd expect it to rev a lot more freely than an eight-valve, with a significantly higher top speed.

hmmm good question dude...the horses on the 16 valve are 153 and torque is also the same. the 8 valve I think puts out 112 or 117 can't really remember but the torque is around 130 lb ft. the 16 valve head has a much more radical cam that tends to bring the motor "alive" around 4000 rpm. the 16valve is a blast to drive and was really way ahead of it's time. hope this helps. by the way i do currently own a 90 740 16valve with 232,000 miles on it...and it still hunts for v-8's to mess around with!!
