Just checked my radiator resvoir(sp) this a.m. and I had no coolant at all. WHat gives? Cold weather here in Chicago maybe? Should I be concerned? Can I Fix it myself?

Thank yous

Re: thirsty radiator 200 88

Just changed the rad. on my '88 two weeks ago.....found a small crack

at the bottom of the plastic tank.....found this by gently wedging a

paper towel around the hoses and trans fluid lines checked them after an

hour trip...then put paper towel under the lower rad hose fitting...

turned green.....bummer...but better that than internal to the engine

....good luck

You may have a leak in your radiator or one of the related hoses. Try adding more antifreeze/coolant and water, if that leaks out, go to a shop and get a compression test done on your radiator, that can tell you if there is a leak. Have fun!

/// Refill with coolant run until it is up to temp. then park over a dry clean spot. You may have a bad water pump, the weep hole is under the pulley and a leak will show up as a wet spot under the water pump.

The heater hoses at the rear of the engine may have a hole and if there is salt on your roads there may be a rust hole in the steel tube that runs to the rear heater hose. Same solution. Look for a wet spot under the rear of the engine.

Re: thirsty radiator 200 88

It coule be leaking from a bunch of places. Most common are the H2O pump seals and gaskets, and the radiator seams. Regardless, you can lessen the leak by slightly loosening the resirvoir cap. I'd find out where the leak is, though, and see how severe.

Often when the temp really drops, that's when the coolant leaks out of some places, where it might not ordinarily leak at all.

/// Remember Murphy was an optomist. A pin hole leak will fail when you are in the desert, on your way to the hospital, etc.
