How similar is the '89 760 Turbo Sedan to the 740? 700 1989

I recently purchased a 1989 Volvo 760 Turbo. I've been looking for parts and mod's for it (Of course I have to make it go faster :) ) and have not found too many for the 760. I was put under the impression that the 740 is very closely related to the 760 and I was wondering if anyone knows just how much they have in common, and dont have in common. Thanks!

The cars are mechanically identical EXCEPT for the rear suspension. 1987 and later 760/960 sedans have multi-link independent rear suspension and Nivomat auto-level shock absorbers, which use lighter than standard springs. You also get to carry 33% more fuel than the live axle car (80L vs. 60L).

Your car MAY also have the Turbo+ kit on it. It allows higher boost under WOT by bleeding off a metered amout of pressure to the wastgate and fooling it. If you have a hose teed off the wastegate hose which leads to round solenoid on the front of the airbox - it's got it.

from what I've read on this board the main differences are cosmetic, trim,

climate control (740 more basic), and options. 760 is high line 7 series should have same motor as 740 turbo.

I would go through the engine & look at belts, hoses, filters, ect ect... Inspect intake tubes, ect ect... for deterioration, CHECK TIMING BELT, flush AT fluid & PS fluid (also uses, AT fluid), service rear differential, flush cooling system & replace thermostat (very easy).

Once the car is 100% & needs no services, K&N air filter + OEM turbo plus will help a bit. Some posts have mentioned Saab APC retrofit to Volvo turbo engines with power gains worthy of the expense.

    good luck, Kevin Walsh
