M46 OD leak 200 1982

My 1982 Turbo sedan has the m46 with overdrive. Over a period of time I have replaced the fourth gear sensor switch, the paper gaskets between the overdrive halves and between the overdrive unit and the transmission case. The rear bushing/seal were replaced. The pan gasket was replaced and I am running Amsoil ATF in it. It functions perfectly but it still has a leak. The fluid drips off of the pan on the OD. But I'm having a difficult time locating the point it is leaking from. It leaked about 24 ounces in 3000 miles once I switched to the ATF. A few questions...

1. I am going to clean everything up and with the car on jackstands I'm going to engage the overdrive in 4th gear and carefully crawl under the car and look for leaks (again). Previously it seemed it was leaking some around the pan gasket. I seldom if ever use gasket cement of any type but perhaps I need something on each side of the gasket to insure a seal. Have any of you had to resort to that??

2. There aren't oil rings used on the bolts that hold the pan on are there?

3. Could the fluid leak out around the solenoid? Are there Orings that could be bad between the solenoid and the case allowing the ATF to leak by??

4. Anybody got any ideas??

Thanks,

Randy

    Re: M46 OD leak 200 1982

Your leak is most likely from the rear of the top two bolts that hold the halves of the OD together. When you replaced the gaskets between the halves, either the copper washers of older models or the plastic plugs of the newer models were not replaced or are no longer capable of sealing. It is also possible to overtighten the top two nuts and cup the washer such that it does not seal.

The solenoid case seal is the aluminum sealing ring bewtwee the body and the OD case. The two internal O-rings separate the fluid paths between supply, application, and release pressures.

I hope it is not leaking from the top (but that should be easy to detect once I get the cases cleaned up). I did replace the two plastic plugs when I had the unit off and apart. I will post back if I find anything today (or tomorrow....)

    Randy:

These OD units ooze (made in England) seemingly all the time. If you overfill they really leak. You need to check the level with the car level. In my case, I always jacked it up from the drivers side and consequently overfilled it. It sounds like you have done everything correctly. There just are not that many gaskets to replace.

On a 78 244 I owned, the OD case had a hairline crack in the casing and would always leak until it was replaced. Just a flaw in the casting. That was a real problem to find.
