240 speedometer question 200 89

Does anyone know whether a cabled speedometer can be fitted on a '89 240DL with an electronic speedo? I know there's no problem at the dashboard end but I can't tell whether the transmission still has the right fitting (no hoist & plenty of snow...).

Alternatively: would an exagerated speed readout and no action on the odometer point to the sensor, the instrument or bad contacts? I already checked that the odometer internal mechanism is free to turn, contacts at instrument seem OK.

Thanks.

For one the tail shaft housing of the transmission is where the speedo drive would be mounted. I believe the 89 uses a speed sensor in the rear end. In addition, you will loose critical speed sensor inputs by bypassing the electric speedo. If you had cruise you won't. etc...

In my experience, this is a problem with the speedo head.

You will need a labscope to check the speed sensor input or a good DVOM. Check the service literature.

No idea on trnasmission. on the speedo the usual cause for no odometer is idler gear breaks. Remove motor and control board and there is a loose gear under that. This is the gear that often breaks. But no odometer would not affect the speedo's indicated speed.

In my '90 the problem was that the "solenoid" which runs the odo had cold soldering. So I opened the speedo and soldered two points in PCB and that cured intermittent odo problem
