Noisy alternator 700 88

It started with the alt light taking longer than usual to go off after a cold start. Now the alt is noisy.

What's next? Should I service it before it lets me down?

Thanks

Time for a rebuild: take it out of the car and to an auto electric shop, where they will replace the regulator and the bearings, and check the windings. Total cost will about $60.

Yes. If you are lucky it is in the process of licking up the last of it's brushes. That is easy. If you are not so lucky, it is in the process of swallowing a bearing. A little more trouble, but doable. If neglected too much longer, things could get grimmer.

I am only assuming that it is not a belt slipping kind of noise.
