how long would CE light take to come back? 700 1989

I had my check engine light come on a few weeks ago, and I've tinkered with the problem areas, and reset the check engine light switch.

If the problems were not fixed by my tinkering (heaven forbid), how long would it take for the check engine light to come back on again?

As a side note, I'll publicly pat myself on the back and tell folks that, after literally years of driving around with a motorized antenna mast that refused to go all the way down or up, I spent 60 monotonous minutes this evening with a rag and a can of WD-40 running the antenna up and down, cleaning out years of gunk that had accumulated in the mast.

A boring process, but it works like a charm. Finally, I've reduced the drag coefficient!

Use some engine oil on the mast 700 1989

or a little bit of 3-in-one oil you may have sitting around.

WD40 is not a lubricant and although it will clean and de-solve the crud on the antenna mast, the mast will soon crud up and seize.

I understand one is not supposed to use silicone lubricant or grease on the mast for RF reception reasons, not that it doesn't work well because I've used silicone spray lube on mine in the past.

Generally I clean/lube the mast every time I wash the car....

Re: Use some engine oil on the mast 700 1989

      John,

I'm not really a fan of oiling antenna masts. Volvo specifically says to use WD40 for wiping the mast clean at each service -no mention of using any lubricant. WD40 leaves an ultra-thin residue which acts mostly as a rust inhibitor (its original purpose), but it also has some minor lubricating properties. I would expect that a film of heavier oils, even 3-in-one, would tend to pick up dirt faster than a film of WD40 residue. Plastics, like that geared nylon drive strip on the end of the mast, could also be chemically attacked by oils leading to their early demise. In sub-freezing weather, I'll take WD40 over oils any day to prevent the mast from sticking at mid-salute as it goes under the garage door.

Of course that's just my personal preference backed up mostly by hypotheses. For all I know, there may be somebody out there who's put a grease nipple on the gear box so they can load the antenna cavity with heavy axle grease and whose antenna masts last longer than mine.

      Cheers -Dave

It's been my experience that WD-40 can promote rust over the long term. I simply wipe the antenna down with windshield cleaner at every fill up.

And I believe it's initial purpose was water displacement, hence the 'WD'.

        I could be wrong, though...

It depends on the situation, but most likely it comes on within a very short distance. Often doing what you did--focusing on problem areas and resetting the light--will keep it off until something else comes along.
