The flashing red light means nothing other than the radio is anti theft code protected. When power is disconected as when replacing the battery, the security code memory is lost. After three attempts with the wrong code, or randomly pushing the preset buttons trying to get it to work, the system locks out. If you have an owners manual, it will tell you the procedure for unlocking the unit. I believe 89 required a 24 hour wait with the radio conected. Some models require the key on radio on for 1-2 hours. Once thge display reads "code", you have to enter the security code. This code "may" be found with your ownership documents but probably got lost. Any dealer can get the code from your V.I.N number in a couple of minutes. If the radio is not original, You will have to remove it and get the part, model, and serial numbers. If you have the radio with a ten digit keypad, it will be a six digit code. Turn on the radio, enter the six digits, and press the "AUT" button. If a six button preset unit, just enter the 4 digit code. If the display reads "rpt" after entering code, either you entered it wrong or it's the wrong code. Remember, you get three trys, then it will lock out again.
