Performance 700 1986

I own an 86 740 Turbo w/intercooler. I am not getting that "kick in the seat of your pants" performance that you should get from a turbo. I have replaced the plugs with Bosch platinums, and keep the oil changed religiously. I would like to get some ideas from everyone as to what simple, and inexpensive ways to boost the performance. Also, I had to get the rear muffler cut off because it was bad, just haven't had the chance to replace it yet. Would the loss of a muffler decrease performance?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: Performance 700 1986

Rene is correct. Go to Michaels site. Look for an APC system(Saab), remove the stock exhaust system and go with a cat back system. Tune your car, change the plugs back to the cooler plug. Turbos hate HOT plugs lie the Platinums. Increase your boost(if you can). Make sure you follow Michaels instuctions on how to make you Volvo faster. If you increase boost, make sure that your car is tuned ot Factory spec and all belts etc have been changed...You can't increase performance without making sure that your base engine can handle it.

Re: Performance 700 1986

As an add on thing to this, i launched my N/A 740 b230 from the lights today, at about 3000 rpms, and i beat an automatic ford falcon, i hit second, then third, by then i realised i was 30k's an hour over the spped limit and i backed off.......Surely my volvo is faster than the 12 seconds 0-100 it is supposed to do (all measurements are in km/h!), i mean, it really felt fast, has anyone else noticed this when taking off with midrange revs?!

Re: Performance 700 1986

Losing a muffler, if anything, will increase performance. Turbos truly dislike backpressure. A great site to see about performance is:

Also look over the www.turbobricks.org site for all kinds of info.
