Clutch Fork 200 84.5

I have a 1984.5 244Ti w/4spOD. What would cause the clutch fork to vibrate? There also is squeeking coming from the throw-out bearing & fork area, and whorling maybe from the imput shaft bearing. (214k on trans)

Thanks,

First 240 Ryan

Re: Clutch Fork 200 84.5

Your squeaking sound is almost definitely the throw out bearing. Probably time for a new one.

Re: Clutch Fork 200 84.5

Hi Andrew,

Do you think a really bad throw out bearing could cause the fork

to oscilate? Or do you think something more significant would cause this?

thanks,

Ryan

Re: Clutch Fork 200 84.5

Ryan,

Well, it does seem quite possible, although I was only refering to the squeaking noise. Seeing as the fork acts directly on the bearing it does makes sense if the bearing is seriouly worn out. Can you feel the vibration in the pedal? On my 142 I recently developed a vibration that I can feel in the pedal when letting the clutch out on downshifts, and sometimes when accelerating, most noticeably around 2500-3000 RPM in 2nd. Is it anything like this? I have had clutch fork problems before, two broken, and although I haven't gotten around to looking at anything yet, the fork was the first thing to come to mind.

Andrew,

Yes, I do experience those symptoms.

My friend seems to think the problem is bent or broken fingers on the

pressure plate. Do you think this is possibly a factor.

Re: Clutch Fork 200 84.5

Bent or broken fingers on the pressure could possibly be the problem. If there are fingers bent or missing, the bearing most likely would not ride smoothly on the pressure plate, setting up a vibration. I had not considered this, and I hope it's not our problem!! I will try to get time tomorrow(Saturday) to get under the car to look at the clutch fork. If it is broken or bent, it should be obvious. The only way to diagnose the pressure plate would be to pull the tranny, unless someone else can confirm that it could very well be the problem. Sorry I'm not more helpful !

Let me know what you find and I'll do the same.

Re: Clutch Fork 200 84.5

I'm experiencing a similar problem from my 84 240DL w/4spOD...it doesn't vibrate all the time though, only in heavy traffic and warm temps. The squeaking sounds the same though...it goes away when I push in the clutch.

Let me know what you find out

Thanks,

Re: Clutch Fork 200 84.5

Don't forget to replace the pilot bearing while you are in there. These

go bad and make it hard to shift into first and reverse. They should

always be replace with a clutch job on a volvo.
