Crazy idea! (station wagon rear seat for sedan) 140-160 1970

I've not been able to find a station wagon I like much. They tend to

lead a hard life.

Instead, I was thinking -- how hard would it be to take the rear

seat setup out of a salvage yard 145 and put that into the 164/140?

The 145 seat would need to be found at a salvage yard, the stock

seat removed and the sheet metal between the trunk and the passenger

compartment removed. I'd also need to figure out how to put the 145

fasteners in place.

I ask because I was trying to take a front bumper from a 164 home

in my 144 (the same 164 that had the GT gauge cluster) and I had to

put it in the passenger compartment with the front right seat folded

back. I was worried that I'd rip the seats up or get them dirty.

The station wagon rear seat would be a *huge* upgrade to these cars,

if it was possible.

Ideas/opinions?

thanks,

chris

As Peter told, there would be some non-ignorable strength problems involved when you cut the wall behind the seat back out. That wall is one of the most important structural sections in the body and cutting it out will require some good replacement sections.

Manufacturers still have a fair amount of problems getting their CCs and wagons as strong as sedans with non-foldable rear seats. The first S**b 9000 CCs, for an example, were incredibly weak. This point was the big improvement of the 9000 CD (sedan) - the first Saab without foldable rear seat for years...

I agree that the feature would be nice in any 120/140/160/240/260/740/760/940/960, anyway..:-)

I am not wholly convinced it is as easy as just taking out the bulkhead underneath the rear window.

Volvo did a fair amount of re-engineering in the wagon at the back, presumably for structural integrity. I reckon you would need some kind of tubular framework to restore strength. Remember the rear shocks feed their load into the inner rear arch.

On a wagon there are box sections under the rear side windows, nothing in a saloon rear wing, and the upright behind the rear doors is more substantial.

I cut a "ski hole" through the armrest area on my old 144, fashioned after the 240's. Worked great for long skinny stuff (like...skis), but not things like plywood.

That sounds like a clever idea! The latches for the seat back should fit in easily.

In a wagon, you simply reach behind the back to release it—how would you release the back if installed in a sedan? (The lever would be accessible only from the trunk.)

You're faced with a bit of reengineering to make the latch accessible from the passenger compartment, but also to preserve safety.
